After getting gubbed by a short head yesterday with my nap, we are hoping to get some profit today.

The Guvnor’s got a soft spot for CELTIC FORTUNE in the 18:18 at Fontwell and reckons this could be the day he finally gets his head in front. He’s been a long-suffering maiden for ages, but the pieces look like they might fall into place today — the trip, the track, and the possible going all tick

the right boxes, and this looks like a good value bet at the Sussex track.

Celtic Fortune’s course record is decent too — 3-4-3 around Fontwell — so he clearly handles the figure of eight circuit. He’s got the stamina too: he ran second over 3m1f at Wincanton and again over 2m7f at Huntingdon during the winter, so this 2m5f+ trip shouldn’t pose any problems. He’s an eight-year-old who travels nicely and generally finishes his races off, which is exactly what you want at this sort of meeting.

Rain’s been forecast for Thursday and Friday, and that would probably suit him if Neil Mulholland has him primed for a first-time-out run. He’s said to go on all ground, whereas a few of those that declared on good could be compromised if it turns sticky.

If that wet stuff arrives, it could swing things in Celtic Fortune’s favour.

Pescatorious looks the obvious danger — he’s been the beaten favourite in his two runs for Olly Murphy, has previous chase form, handles any ground, and Sean Bowen’s on board — so he’ll be popular. Still, Celtic Fortune tends to travel through his races well and should be able to stick with the principals before making his move; if Pescatorious or another front-runner fades late, our boy could be there to take advantage.

There are, of course, risks. Seventeen runs without a win is a worry for anyone, and first-time-back performances can be hit-or-miss if the trainer hasn’t got him spot on. However, he has run well off higher marks in the past, the yard has been picking up winners lately, and the handicap mark looks workable. For a horse that’s been knocking on the door, this feels a bit like last-chance saloon — but one he’s got a proper shout in.

All in all, The Guvnor’s feeling pretty hopeful. If the rain comes and he’s on his game from Mulholland, Celtic Fortune has every chance of getting off the mark. It’s worth an each-way nibble for those of you who like a bit of value.

The Guvnor’s tip: Celtic Fortune (Each-Way) (Nap) — 9/1* with many firms (3 places).
